Today on the 9th September, we celebrate Children’s Day and here at Educación Plus, it is a special day that reminds us of our promise to the underprivileged children that we work with. For over 15 years, we have celebrated this day for every one of the 365 days in the year without interruption.
Each time we meet a child that doesn’t go to school or a child that has no money to buy food for their family or a child that doesn’t even have a stable family to go home to… When we meet a boy or girl that does not have shoes for school or needs us to take them to the doctor… When we hand out bits of fruit, give them a prize for effort and see them excited as they get on the bus for a day out or receive their first invite to one of our camps… When we play football or board games or have a joke around and laugh together… When we are invited into their homes and humbly presented with a cup of coffee or a glass of pineapple juice… When we know that a rebellion is not down to a bad child, but down to their history of abuse and mistreatment from a disintegrated family and when we see a plain disinterest in learning which only motivates us to encourage them in their education… When we console a child that has lost a loved one or offer words of hope, advice and faith to a disorientated child… When we stretch out a hand to celebrate friendship through an affectionate gesture... When we witness a first sighting of the sea, whistle for attention or announce that it’s time for a swim in the pool… When we say Merry Christmas or ask how their mother is or if their father has found work yet… When we share the joy of putting on a new school uniform for the first time… When we rip off a plaster or take a child to the clinic to have a nail taken out of their foot… When we calm them down after a dispute during a kickabout… When they arrive at the club and don’t want to be there or show us the bruises from the punch their angry mother gave them when fueled by alcohol… These are so many times that we have wanted to do more for them all, but haven’t been able to…
Nowadays, adults talk a lot about children’s rights, but we often forget that there are some things that will make you truly happy in your life, because once the sweet has been eaten, once the game is won and once the party ends, friendship and love are the things that stay with you forever. So, to all the boys and girls that we work with at Educación Plus, Happy Children’s Day for today and for every day after.
